Office Hygiene: Keeping Your Workspace Sanitized and Safe

The average office desk is home to hundreds of times more bacteria than a toilet seat. With multiple employees sharing communal spaces, keyboards, telephones, and meeting tables, offices are prime environments for the transmission of bacteria and viruses. Maintaining high standards of office hygiene is vital to protect staff health, reduce sick leave, and boost workplace morale.

Sanitising Keyboards and Phones

Keyboards and office desk phones are touched continuously throughout the day. Food crumbs, hand oils, and dust get trapped between keys. Staff should use compressed air to blow out debris, then use disinfectant wipes with 70% isopropyl alcohol to wipe down the keys, mouse, and phone receiver daily.

Communal Kitchens and Breakrooms

Office kitchens are high-traffic zones where germs spread fast. Fridge handles, microwave buttons, and kettle handles are touched by almost every staff member. Ensure these high-touch surfaces are wiped down with sanitising spray multiple times a day, and wash dish sponges weekly as they breed bacteria rapidly.

Clean Desks, Clear Minds

Encourage a “clean desk policy” where employees clear papers and clutter at the end of the day. This allows professional cleaning crews to spray and thoroughly wipe down desk surfaces during night shifts, ensuring a sterile and inviting workspace every morning.
